15.12 - Podcast Review of Episode 12 of Hospital Playlist

Today, we’ll be discussing Episode 12, the finale of Season 1 of Hospital Playlist, starring Jo Jung-suk as Lee Ik Joon, Yoo Yeon-seok as Ahn Jeong Won, Jung Kyung-ho as Kim Jun Wan, Kim Dae-myung as Yang Seok Hyeong, and Jeon Mi-do as Chae Song Hwa. We discuss:

  • The songs we featured during the recap:

    • “Me to You, You to Me” by Mido and Falasol, originally recorded by Jatanpung and featured in the 2003 Korean movie The Classic.

    • “Lonely Night” by Kwon Jin Ah, a softer, more intimate remake of the 1997 rock ballad by Boohwal.

  • Ahn Jeong Won's extraordinary care for a young girl who suffers a serious abdominal injury in a scooter accident, and the touching Christmas Eve visit from her grateful family.

  • How our five doctors have very different ways of relating to their patients, from Ahn Jeong Won's emotional investment to Kim Jun Wan's businesslike approach, Yang Seok Hyeong's quiet compassion, and Lee Ik Jun's easygoing warmth.

  • The two liver transplant cases, including a young wife who cannot donate to her husband because their marriage was never registered, and a critically ill patient who receives a lifesaving liver when another transplant falls through.

  • Kim Jun Wan's extraordinarily difficult surgery on a patient with an infected aortic stent, and how Do Jae Hak's persistence and willingness to suggest a different approach help save the patient's life.

  • The heartbreaking scene in which Yang Seok Hyeong tells a pregnant woman that her baby has died, the causes of stillbirth, and how the other expectant mothers in the waiting room silently share her grief.

  • The patient who suffers a catastrophic brain bleed, what brain death means, and the emotional revelation that Chae Song Hwa was the young doctor who cared for medical student Yun Bok's dying mother many years earlier.

  • Yang Seok Hyeong's inheritance of his father's textile company, his refusal to abandon medicine, and his determination to spend his precious time doing what he loves. We also discuss his rejection of Chu Min Ha's Christmas dinner invitation and the unexpected phone call from his ex-wife.

  • Jang Gyeo Ul's tearful confession to Ahn Jeong Won, his decision not to enter the priesthood, and their long-awaited first kiss!

  • Lee Ik Jun's carefully worded confession to Chae Song Hwa before leaving for Spain.

  • Kim Jun Wan's heartbreak when an emergency surgery prevents him from saying goodbye to Lee Ik Sun before she leaves for England.

  • Our final thoughts on Season 1 of Hospital Playlist, why the show is such an authentic portrayal of medicine and the emotional lives of doctors, and why its storytelling, acting, music, and friendships make it so memorable.

  • We also look ahead to Season 16 of K Drama Chat, when we'll recap and analyze Scandal, starring Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, and Nana.

We also celebrate Joanna's successful book launch party for When It Mattered Most, congratulate our friend Ernabel Demillo on winning a New York Emmy Award for her work on CUNY TV's Asian American Life, and thank Ellen Sullivan for her contributions to our podcast discussions.
