8.13 - Podcast Review of Episode 13 of Crash Landing On You (CLOY)

Today, we’ll be discussing Episode 13 of Crash Landing On You, the hit K Drama on Netflix starring Hyun Bin as Ri Jyeong hyeok, Son Ye-jin as Yoon Se-ri, Seo Ji-hye as Seo Dan and Kim Jung-hyun as Gu Seung joon. We discuss:

  • The songs that we featured during the recap: Someday by Kim Jae Hwan and The Season of Us by Nam Hye Seung and Park Sang Hee.

  • How Se-ri knows that Captain Ri needs to go home; in fact, she’s worried about Captain Ri experiencing Bambi Syndrome.

  • How the ducklings realize that Se-ri is not a crier. She never cried during the many sad and terrible situations that happened to her while in North Korea, but she’s now crying over a surprise birthday party!

  • The adorable couple rings that Captain Ri bought for Se-ri and himself!

  • How “to bunk off” means to play hooky or take the day off. Captain Ri and Se-ri bunk off and go to the movies and visit a beautiful suspension bridge.

  • Captain Ri’s revelation to Se-ri that they had met on the Sigriswil bridge when she tried to kill herself.

  • How Gu Seung Jun and Seo Dan are getting closer. Gu Seung Jun has even confessed that he has a crush on her.

  • When Seo Dan realizes that Captain Ri went to Seoul to save Se-ri, she breaks down. Her engagement is broken and seven years of waiting have amounted to nothing.

  • The tough decision that Jung Man Bok faces when Cho Cheol Gang finds him and threatens his son.

  • Kim Ju Meok’s sweet, surprise lunch with the gorgeous Choi Ji-woo.

  • The former Chairman and his wife are furious with Yoon Se-hyeong and his wife, but the devious couple have one more trick up their sleeve. Se-ri is in real danger as she drives to her father’s house.

  • We are so glad that Jung Man Bok did not betray Captain Ri and instead collaborated with Captain Ri, Se-ri and the ducklings to protect Se-ri during her drive, and Captain Ri when he went to the warehouse.

  • The heartbreaking ending where Se-ri, in trying to protect Captain Ri, ends up getting shot by Cho Cheol Gang.

  • How we need to start thinking about the show to recap and analyze in Season 9 of K Drama Chat! Please send us suggestions on Instagram and the blog!

  1. So now we are swooning over a shirtless Gu Seung-jun! Will the swooning never stop! ;-) I realize fantastic abs are one of the K Drama elements, but I have watched literally hundreds of hours of K Dramas and maybe seen women's' abs twice! I feel cheated! ;-)

I was a little surprised by your choices of which K Drama star you would like to have lunch with. I thought you both would have chose Hyun Bin! But I guess you two wouldn't be able to enjoy the meal with your jaws on the floor or passing out from all your swooning! LOL! Sung-Hee's choice was actually surprising, but quite interesting. Joanna, of course your choice was not. IU would be my choice as well. That woman is talent and charisma personified. Maybe we can arrange a lunch for the three of us! You will have to do most of the talking as I will be busy swooning!

    1. Hello Malcolm! Remember, no one is stopping you from swooning over IU, or Son Ye Jin, for that matter! We believe in equal opportunity swooning!

Unfortunately, it looks like Se Ri will not be wearing a bikini at this rate.

    2. Malcolm, Sung Hee and I laughed at YOUR comment. To be honest, having lunch with Hyun Bin didn't occur to us. I think we're happy to look at Hyun Bin, but lunch, that's a different story. We want to have lunch with amazing and interesting women! Are we showing our age? Haha!

  2. As for a show for next season....

I loved when you did Queen of Tears in real time and actually did not know what was going to happen in the next episode. I had a look at upcoming shows on Netflix but didn't see anything in the next month or so that seemed like a sure fire hit. So I would suggest Castaway Diva. I don't think either of you have watched it? Its got a great cast and OST. I'm fairly certain you would both like it. But you have to do it in "real time" no watching the next episode until you record!

My other suggestions are the same as last time:

    1. My Mister - Staring IU, need I say more...

    2. Reply 1988 - Set right before the Seoul Olympics. It was a pretty transformative time in Korean society and there would certainly be a lot to talk about regarding that. Plus I'm sure everyone is going through a little Olympic withdrawal. Also, I think you two are roughly the same age as the characters in the show and it might be interesting to contrast 1988 Seoul with where you were growing up. Almost like a time travel K Drama without actual time travel!

    3. My Blues - I really enjoyed this one. It is about ordinary people's lives on Jeju Island. No Chaebol families, no time travel, no zombies, no supernatural characters. It has an AMAZING cast. I highly recommend. Also, I don't think wither of you have seen it, so could be another in "real time" for you two.

Very curious as to what you will pick....

    1. Malcolm, what an interesting idea to do a show that we hadn't watched, so that we can recap and analyze in real time. Thanks for this idea! It's proving to be really hard to pick the show for Season 9! Thank you for the suggestions!

  3. Wow, watching and reviewing a show in "real time" with no peeking, what an idea! Though, as I have told Joanna before, I'm pretty much doing this already. Since I have no short term memory (don't worry I still remember how to do anesthesia), reviewing these shows that I have seen before is already a novel experience. After we finish each episode, I am looking forward to seeing the next one to see what happens next!

I agree, My Mister is one of the greatest Kdramas of all time, with a stunning performance by IU. I also love Reply 1988, though I have to admit that we are not that age, but actually older. I visited Korea for the first time in 1987, the year before the Olympics, right after graduating from college. But, close enough.

I have seen My Blues and you're right, it does have an incredible cast.

I'm also curious to know what we will do next. We suffer from an embarassment of riches.

    1. Sung-Hee, or should I say Noona?! I would not have guessed you graduated college in the 80s! Must be that Korean skin care! ;-) If you visited in 87 you must have some memories of Korea getting ready for the Olympics. Late 80s Korea was a LOT different than the Korea of today. More so than 80s America compared to today. Would be really interesting to hear you talk about it.

    2. If you go by Korean school age, I would have been in middle school.

  4. Sung-Hee and Joanna, let me preface this comment with, LOVE your podcasts! To be honest, I wasn't that excited about your choice of CLOY as the follow-up to your blockbuster Season 7 on Queen of Tears as I had already watched CLOY multiple times. But I should have known you would bring new connections to light, like in this episode. I hadn't picked up on how much more emotionally vulnerable Seri let herself become upon her return to Seoul as to be driven to tears by the touching birthday celebrations, or that the ducklings were perceptive enough to pick up on this change in her. And as I learned from listening to your Season 3, I do forget a lot of the details and listening to your podcast is a satisfying and far more efficient way to re-live 16 to 24 episodes of a drama than re-watching them (although I have been known to do that as well, when time allows).

    1. Hello, Anne! Thank you so much for your comment. We're so glad you're enjoying the podcast. What you're saying is interesting because we also have the same experience, where we are surprised by the depth of these shows as we go through them. For example, we did Mr Queen partly because I LOVE this show and have pushing it on everyone I know. We found so much more to talk about than we realized, even though both Joanna and I thought we knew the show well. I probably saw it at least three times before we covered it for the podcast.

    2. Anne, thank you for the love! Your comment means to much to us! We decided to do CLOY because it's such a K Drama classic and it's been the gateway for so many people. And just as Sung Hee shared, we just *knew* that we would discover more about this show when we stopped and analyzed it in great detail. I had watched the show twice before but oh boy, I missed so much back then! Thanks for sticking with us!

  5. Regarding suggestions for future seasons (the first three of which I think you’ve mentioned):
    1. Marry My Husband, January/February 2024, Amazon Prime - a revenge drama with a time-traveling twist (trigger warning for infidelity). They tried to make Park Min-Young look dowdy! And Na In-woo is just dreamy as man strong enough to let a woman handle her own issues.
    2. Alchemy of Souls, Season 1: June-August, 2022. Season 2 December 2022-January 2023, Netflix. Harry Potter meets Star Wars but in Korean. It took me a while to become really invested in this show, but so worth the slow build-up.
    3. Destined with You, August - October 2023 (Ro-woon of Tomorrow) Ro-woon playing against type: a tsundere mail instead of his usually Golden Retriever puppy. I tried to wait until all the episodes had dropped before starting this drama, but I eventually gave in and had to endure tortuous days waiting for the next episodes to drop.

    4. Bad and Crazy, December 2021-January 2022, iqyi and now on Netflix. Lee Dong-wook of Goblin(!) as a corrupt cop with a troubled conscience and a mysterious, joyful, bubbly Wi Ha-Joon trying to reform him. This man is also so versatile, playing a role so opposite of his Little Women character.

    5. To build on Malcolm's suggestion of a currently-airing drama, Love Next Door, on Netflix (episodes 1 and 2 just dropped this past weekend), starring Jung Hae-in (DP, While You Were Sleeping, Something in the Rain) and Jung So-Min (Alchemy of Souls, Love Reset). A woman returns to Korea for a restart after living and working abroad in the US and encounters her childhood partner in crime.

I could go on and on (Romance is a Bonus Book, Familiar Wife, Start-Up, A Shop for Killers)... As sad as it will be to reach the end of your 8th season, glad to hear you're gearing up for a 9th!

  6. I totally overlooked that a Wanna One member did an OST. I had to consult Color Coded Lyrics and watch a couple of videos to figure out who he is, as they had ELEVEN members.

Am I the only one who started crying when Kim Ju Meok saw Choi Ji Woo? I think I'd like to have lunch with Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook. I would just sit there and observe them being silly together.

Now onto my suggestions for next season:

    1. Twinkling Watermelon I relate to a lot of it.

    2. The Good Bad Mother I love Lee Do Hyun's acting and this is some of his best work. (I have yet to watch Exhuma, even though I own it)

    3. Marry My Husband You know I love my Webtoon adaptations. And maybe my husband will finally finish watching it.

    4. I wouldn't be against Bad and Crazy. I had started it a while back and it's actually played in a non kdrama.

    1. Laurel, thank for your suggestions! And lunch with Gong Yoon and Lee Dong Wook, that is brilliant! I LOVED their bromance in Goblin and their friendship in real life.

There are so many good shows to consider for Season 9. This is going to be hard. You gave us some good recommendations!

And please send me a photo Kim Jae Hwan so I can know which one of the 11 members of Wanna One he is! Amazing!
