  • How asking if someone has eaten is a common way of greeting people in Korea; it’s a sign of caring to ask and then offer food.

  • How Captain Ri always seems to be confident about his future and maybe it’s because he doesn’t think about his future and doesn’t believe he can ever be happy again.

  • The really expensive Chopard watch that Se-ri pawns and the watch she sees at the pawnbroker’s shop.

  • How Se-ri needs to change her appearance for her upcoming trip to Pyongyang. She chooses the “Goodbye” hairstyle, of all things!

And he is listening in on Yoon Se-ri, who elevated his wife’s position in the village and saved his son from the school bullies.

  • The magical scene outside the train between Se-ri and Captain Ri when she fell asleep and Captain Ri covered her with his overcoat and let her lean on his shoulder.

  1. Thank you for yet another beautifully crafted podcast! Please keep up your great work.

  2. Joanna, I seem to recall watching an episode of Queen of Tears during physical therapy.
My teenage daughter taught me about localization, which imparts things like cultural elements into translations.
I started watching Record of Youth but it hasn't caught my interest yet.
I love the coat that Se-ri wears on the train.

    1. Ooh. How do you turn on localization? Viki translations will often have cultural elements. It's rare to see them on Netflix shows.

Yes, Se-ri's coat on the train is beautiful! It was probably a cheap coat that she made stylish by being who she is!

I'm watching Our Beloved Summer and am LOVING it!

  3. I enjoyed how Sung Hee emphasized that Son Ye-jin stared in Something in the Rain knowing how much Joanna hats that K Drama! ;-) Maybe if it had time travel in it or a mythical creature......

Joanna, I thought your language hack was going to be watching the show in Korean without subtitles! I'm sure you could do it seeing how you've seen the show multiple times!

Sung Hee, I find the best way to stay on top of these complicated K Dram plots like Lovely Runner is to binge 8 - 10 episode all at once! lol! How's that for a hack?! And you wonder how I've watched so many of these shows.....

Interesting that the Top 5 myths website you linked to is a tour operator. It's illegal for Americans to travel to North Korea using their US passport. I think UK, Canadian, Australian and other English language countries don't have that ban. I've seen several youtube videos made by people who traveled there. Would be really interesting, but I'd be pretty nervous.

    Another great episode!
